Thomas Coughlan is a Graduate of University College Cork, holding the Degrees of Bachelor of Civil Law (B.C.L.), Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) and Master of Laws (LL.M). Tom completed his Masters’ Degree by research in the area of Immigration Law (LL.M). Tom was admitted to Practice in the State of New York in 1998 where he was Assistant General Counsel of a Manhattan Hospital. He was admitted to the United States Supreme Court in 2007, being one of the few Irish Lawyers admitted to practice before that Court.
Tom has a specialist interest in Immigration and Human Rights Law and represents a large number of clients in these areas of practice. The firm has represented clients in many ground-breaking and precedent-setting cases before the superior courts of Ireland and the Court of Justice of the European Union. Tom also practices in the areas of litigation with a particular emphasis on personal injuries and commercial disputes. Tom also represents clients in all areas of criminal defence and has acted for clients in all Courts in the State.
Tom has lectured in Law at University College Cork and tutored at the Law Society of Ireland. He is a Director of the Irish Institute of Continuing Professional Development and speaks in the areas of immigration law, criminal law and procedure and civil litigation.
